Email Tone and Etiquette

The casual simplicity and effectiveness of email can sometimes lure electronic correspondents into inappropriate tone. Consequently, one must take extra care when composing an email to ensure proper tone is conveyed.

• Avoid using capitalization and punctuation for emphasis.  Capitalize and punctuate as you would in a normal writing.
  
• Keep your tone professional.  Err on the side of being overly polite.
  
• Avoid jokes and sarcastic language.  Email is easy to misinterpret.
