Step 1: Look at your assignment. Are you being asked simply to summarize a reading or lecture, or will you need to include your own thoughts about the material? Will you need to integrate your summary into a larger paper?

Step 2: Look back at the article, chapter, or lecture notes you've been asked to summarize. Underline those ideas that seem most important.

Now, turn your article or notes over and without looking at them again, summarize the main points below. Be sure to use your own words!

Step 3: Name your source. Who wrote the article or gave the lecture? Is the article from a book or magazine? Explain below:

Step 4: Look back at your responses in steps two and three. Now, write one sentence that includes your source and uses a signal phrase.
