Compare and Contrast Workout » Making a Point » Do Your Own

Get your assignment in front of you, then follow the instructions below. Type your answer to each step in the box below it, then click on the button at the bottom when you are finished. Step 1: What is your topic? (for example, deep sea fish) Write it in the box below, then write what you will compare and contrast (for example, sharks and whales). Step 2: List your general points of comparison and contrast (for example, size, feeding habits, reproduction), and a couple of specific similarities and differences (for example, both sharks and some whales eat smaller fish): Step 3: Look for ways that these points of comparison and contrast might work together. How might they be used to support a main idea? (For example, the fact that sharks and whales eat smaller fish might illustrate the idea that the ocean can be a dangerous place.) List some of the ideas your comparison might support: Step 4: Look at your list of possible main ideas. Which of the ideas most interest you? Why? Which of the ideas seem to suggest even more points of comparison and contrast?
