Tip 3: Practice!

Well before you take your test, you should practice writing opinion pieces. This involves many steps.

You will want to practice:

  • Taking a position and arguing it.

  • Formulating the sections of your argument.

  • Gathering support data.

  • Organizing the sequence of your presentation.

  • Writing drafts. (Try to limit the time you spend to 45 minutes, so that you get used to working within a 60 minute time period. You should reserve 15 minutes to revise your work.)

  • Critiquing your own work, your peer's work and published editorials. Consult tutors, professors and peers when you work on this step.

  • Asking good questions about your work.

  • Editing and proofreading. Remember to reserve 15 minutes for this step
